Metropolitan Church of Targoviste

Located in the heart of the city, Târgoviște Metropolitanate is a real landmark of the old Seat Citadel, talking about the greatness of bygone times. The old church, which no longer exists, built from the piety of Prince Neagoe Basarab and consecrated in 1520, was the first place with eight towers in the entire Orthodox space and the second in Orthodoxy, at that time, in size and height, after the Cathedral of St. Sofia of Constantinople.

For 148 years, Neagoe's church was the Metropolitan Church of Wallachia.

The story of the old Targoviste Metropolis ends in 1889, when the walls of the great church of Neagoe Basarab are methodically demolished by the French architect Lecomte de Nouy, who should have actually restored it. He also built the current Archbishop's Cathedral, which retains almost nothing of the outfit and style of the old church, but which still stands out as a true architectural monument.

Appointments for a guided tour can be made at the National Center for Tourist Information and Promotion Târgoviște, at the phone number 0245/633 341 or by e-mail at cnipt.tgv@gmail.com.
