Stolnicul Church

Stolnicul Church from Târgoviște, located on Constantin Cantacuzino Stolnicul Street, no. 5, is one of the few cult buildings built from the ground up in the time of Constantin Brâncoveanu that has been preserved. Founded in 1705 by Constantin Cantacuzino Stolnicul and his wife, Safta Buhus, the church is dedicated to St. Stephen to honor the saint whose name was borne by their son, who later became lord (1714-1716). The church also received the patron saint of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, as well as the patron saint of Saint Elijah, patron of the guild of tanners and furriers who had their slum in the immediate vicinity.

Over time, the place of worship has undergone many transformations, which have greatly altered its shape. Repaired in 1854, the building was radically transformed in 1882, adding the two side apses supported in the axis by a buttress, the windows being widened, the floor was rebuilt and the iconostasis was replaced. Another stage of repairs is recorded in 1925 when the interior is completely renovated and painted, Pavel Ionescu from Râncaciov-Dâmbovița being the master painter. The last major works aimed at consolidating the church and were carried out in 1942 to remove the effects of the devastating earthquake of November 1940.
